Argumentation

"The beauty of the argument is that if you argue correctly, you are never wrong.” - Christopher Buckley

Introduktion

The main themes in The Writing of The Long Song are the legacy of slavery and history in comparison to fiction. The legacy of slavery is very prominent already in the beginning of the essay, as it is already mentioned in the first couple of lines: “[…] the topic for discussion was the legacy of slavery.” (Line 2-3). The theme is then explored in relation to slavery in Jamaica and how that is linked to individuals feeling shame because of their slave ancestors, which also is the reason as to why Levy decided to write a novel on the exact topic. Moreover, Levy enlightens the receivers in how the slavery, in Jamaica, usually is not presented through Jamaican people’s narratives and perspectives.

The point of view is interesting in this short story, as it emphases the fragmented mind of the main character. His mind is constantly traveling between here, elsewhere, past and present, and one thought always leads to another. As the main character narrates, we are being dragged with him in his stream of consciousness.

It’s clear that Goodwin wishes to be more like Morehouse, but he can’t. Goodwin feels the need to please, where Morehouse are more liberated from, what traditionally are categorized as good manors and morals. Morehouse does not have a problem with illegal workers and using other peoples’ dumpsters. Morehouse has accepted his differences from his parents, where Goodwin seems to nurture the thought of similarity, so he can avoid conflict:Morehouse accepted, as Goodwin did not quite, that their parents were fundamentally different; their Chineseness was inalienable”. Morehouse is more detached from morals than Goodwin. He’s the black sheep who dares to swear and take risks.

PEEL-modellen

RP

Evidence

Klik her for at se en liste over linkers.
