Introduktion

Assignment 2 er en mere omfattende grammatisk opgave, der typisk fokuserer på tre forskellige emner indenfor grammatik, ortografi eller tegnsætning. Her er eksempelvis fokus på passivkonstruktioner, substantivernes bøjning, relative pronomener, sammensatte verballed samt forskellige funktioner af bestemte ord. Tekstmaterialet i Assignment 2 vil typisk være et sted mellem 15 og 20 linjer. Eksemplerne, som eleven forventes at bruge i sin besvarelse, er understreget i teksten.

I could see for the first time that the RPO Building was in fact made of separate bricks, and that it wasn’t white, as I’d always thought, but a pale yellow. I could now see too that it was even taller than I had imagined – twenty-two stories – and that each repeating window was underlined by its own special ledge. I saw how the Sun had drawn a diagonal line right across the face of the RPO Building, so that on one side of it there was a triangle that looked almost white, while on the other was one that looked very dark, even though I now knew it was all the pale yellow colour. And not only could I see every window right up to the rooftop, I could sometimes see the people inside, standing, sitting, moving around. Then down on the street, I could see the passers-by, their different kinds of shoes, paper cups, shoulder bags, little dogs, and if I wanted, I could follow with my eyes any one of them all the way past the pedestrian crossing and beyond the second Tow-Away Zone sign, to where two overhaul men were standing beside a drain and pointing. I could see right inside the taxis as they slowed to let the crowd go over the crossing – a driver’s hand tapping on his steering wheel, a cap worn by a passenger.

The day went on, the Sun kept us warm, and I could see Rosa was very happy. But I noticed too that she hardly looked at anything, fixing her eyes constantly on the first Tow-Away Zone sign just in front of us. Only when I pointed out something to her would she turn her head, but then she’d lose interest and go back to looking at the sidewalk outside and the sign.

In the lead up to The Car’s release, much has been made of the evolution of Turner’s voice. In the early days it was lean and hard and northern, sitting somewhere between the nose and the throat. Today it has grown warmer, fuller, with a burnished depth. It’s lighter than that of his clear influence Richard Hawley, and given to that sudden upward sweep, as on the sublime closer Perfect Sense. There are shades of Frankies-era Holly Johnson here, perhaps – or, in its combination of northernness, cadence and soul, Mick Hucknall in Simply Red’s pre-Stars heyday. This is perhaps not a comparison that the band or Ford were reaching, but nevertheless it produces something irresistible: it’s a pleasure to hear Turner steer his voice so masterfully along There’d Better Be a Mirrorball, all aching, sweet-souled romance.

If Arctic Monkeys’ early songs told of the dramas of sprawling nights out – anticipation, electropop, dancefloors; lotharios, riot vans, jumbled taxi rides home – then the subject-matter on The Car is not so very far removed. They might now talk of the Riviera, jet skis and photo shoots, but the idea remains that there is something awry behind this glittering world of mirrorballs and disco strobes, marble, chandeliers, spotlights. The champagne is travel-sized, the apartment is dusty, the heart that is predictably heavy.

Then there are the three members of the Di Grasso family, here to steep themselves in their Sicilian heritage and to represent to us the three ages of man and the penis. Grandfather Bert spends his time flirting harmlessly/embarrassingly/harassingly (depending on your generation and point of view) with every young waitress he meets. Then there’s Dom, whose wife and daughter have not accompanied him on the trip because they are (it is revealed in another beautifully written duologue between him and his unseen wife on the phone) seething about the latest of his infidelities. Albie is the conciliatory son, horrified by his grandfather’s behaviour but also at least as much by the idea that any woman should have to look “at an old man’s junk”. Bert doesn’t see the issue. “It’s not like it was ever beautiful anyway. It is a penis, not a sunset.” At least some wisdom comes with age, even if adaptation to new sociosexual mores don’t. [..]

Tanya McQuoid, played by the inimitable Jennifer Coolidge this time with a slightly darker, more genuinely desperate edge to her irreducible chaos and selfishness. She is now married to sport fisher Greg, her love interest from the end of season one, who has turned into something of a bully – critical of her weight, uninterested in her needs or desires, of which admittedly there are probably more than one person can reasonably be expected to meet. Did he indeed marry her for her money and is now allowing his contempt to show?

In the moment before Jada Pinkett Smith’s husband strode onstage to slap another man during Sunday night’s Oscars ceremony, the camera panned briefly to her face. Comedian Chris Rock had just made a joke at her expense, and she did not appear happy. She rolled her eyes. She clasped her hands tightly in her lap. She sat ramrod straight, wearing a high-necked emerald gown – there was almost a genteel Victorian sensibility to her restrained displeasure.

Pinkett Smith’s reaction to the joke potentially contained multitudes: Embarrassment? Irritation? Self-consciousness? But instead of Oscar viewers focusing on how she had felt in that moment, the narrative of Sunday’s ceremony became that Will Smith smacked Chris Rock on live television.

In case you missed the shocking and bizarre sequence of events: From the stage, Rock noted Pinkett Smith’s current lack of hair and joked that he would see her “in ‘G.I. Jane 2.’ ” From the audience, Will Smith first appeared to laugh, but the next frame showed him crossing the stage and slapping Rock squarely across the face. “Keep my wife’s name out your (expletive) mouth,” Smith called out, moments later. A dumbfounded Rock replied “Wow, dude! It was a ‘G.I. Jane’ joke!” and a visibly angered Smith repeated himself.

Recently I had called home. I did that at least a couple of times a month from one of the many public pay phones around town. The phone booths were like sanctuaries, step inside of them, shut the accordion type doors and you locked yourself into a private world free of dirt, the noise of the city blocked out. The phone booths were private, but the lines back home weren’t. Back there every household had a party line. About eight or ten different houses all used the same line, only with different numbers. If you’d pick up the phone receiver, seldom would the line ever be clear. There were always other voices. Nobody ever said anything important over the phone and you didn’t ramble on long. If you wanted to talk to people, you’d usually talk to them in the street, in vacant lots, fields or in cafes, never on the phone.

My mother would usually give me the latest run of the mill stuff. My father had his own way of looking at things. To him life was hard work. He had come from a generation of different values, heroes and music, and wasn’t so sure that the truth would set anybody free. He was pragmatic and always had a word of cryptic advice. “Remember, Robert, in life anything can happen. Even if you don’t have all the things you want, be grateful for the things you don’t have that you don’t want.” My education was important to him. He would have wanted me to become a mechanical engineer. But in school, I had to struggle to get even decent grades. I was not a natural student. My mom, bless her, who had always stood up for me and was firmly on my side in just about anything and everything, was more concerned about “a lot of monkey business out there in the world,” and would add, “Bobby, don’t forget you have relatives in New Jersey.”

In fact Little Bastard had caused upset almost from the moment Dean bought it. A week before the fatal crash Dean met British actor Alec Guinness in Los Angeles. On that fateful Friday, Wütherich sat next to Dean, whom Hickman followed with his truck and trailer. Police pulled over the convoy and issued a pair of speeding tickets just outside Bakersfield. It didn’t slow Dean down one bit. Dean was barreling down Route 466 at an estimated 85 mph when a young Cal Poly student named Donald Turnupseed, driving a Ford Tudor, decided to make a sudden turn on to Route 41. The impact sent the Ford almost 40 feet down the road and ejected Wütherich from the Porsche. Dean was pronounced dead on arrival at the Paso Robles War Memorial hospital at 6.20pm.

From the beginning, Twitter executives wanted users to rely on their service in moments of crisis. The company’s founder, Jack Dorsey, told 60 Minutes a decade ago that he got the idea for Twitter in part from listening to a police scanner when he was a child. In a subsequent interview, he suggested that he first understood the platform’s power after a tremor in the Bay Area: “I was in the office on a Saturday, and my phone buzzed, and it was a tweet, and it said simply, ‘Earthquake.’” By 2015, the U.S. Geological Survey was using Twitter to better monitor earthquakes and people’s reactions to those earthquakes in areas where the agency lacked sufficient sensors.

Perhaps it and other agencies were naive to depend so much on a private company’s willingness to continue providing a free communications service. But Twitter clearly relished its own importance in a time of crisis that presumably contributed to the platform’s overall popularity. The company provided guidance and best practices to emergency-response agencies. According to Twitter’s website, “crisis and emergency response” is one of its five stated areas of focus.

Bridgers’ rage makes her a logical musical icon for a generation that has plenty to be upset about. When Teen Vogue polled young people about their views in advance of the fall midterm elections, 71% said they feel “mostly pessimistic about the future”; 90% said the country is “on the wrong track.” Bridgers’ disenchantment with the status quo feels both authentic and appropriate. Her words and actions have resonated with Gen Z fans who want celebrities to put their money where their mouth is, without anointing themselves as activists.

Over the years, Bridgers has made an effort to “show everybody what [she believes] in.” In 2020, during the uprising for Black lives, her sophomore album Punisher was set to be released on Juneteenth (an oversight, or “bimbo hours,” as she put it). Bridgers surprise-dropped the album a day early and encouraged listeners to donate to a list of advocacy groups. “That was one of my first moments realizing, ‘Oh, I actually have power,’” Bridgers says. “On the days where everybody is paying attention to me because I am putting something out there, you can point it to something really useful.”

Over the past several decades, Ireland has served as a tax shelter for many large tech companies, thanks to its low corporate tax rate. Companies typically create Irish subsidiaries of their companies that license their intellectual property, on which the subsidiary pays royalties. Some 800 US companies have operations in Ireland, according to the American Chamber of Commerce Ireland, employing about 180,000 people. Apple opened its first plant in Ireland in 1980 and now employs some 6,000 people at its address in the city of Cork. Facebook has established its international headquarters in Dublin in 2008, and Google announced its European headquarters which would be in Ireland in 2003.

Irish finance minister Paschal Donohoe has said in a statement Thursday that the agreement will “address the tax challenges of digitalisation.” Donohoe added that he believes companies will still choose to locate their headquarters in Ireland.
